A Brief History of Wilstead Players
Wilstead Players were formed in 1971 after an influx of new young families to the village at the start of the housing boom.
The driving force in these early years was undoubtedly Derek Smith who sadly is no longer with us. Several of the original team are still very actively involved, along with many new members. The Group performed many serious and more light-hearted productions during the early years along with annual Revues of sketches, dancing and singing, involving lots of people from the village, both on stage and behind the scenes.
The Group has entered local Drama Festivals with One Act Plays with many successes and numerous awards. In 1996 our performance of 'Porch' by Jack Heifner was chosen in 2000 to represent the Best of Amateur Theatre Nationally in the All-Winners' Final held at Felixstowe. Coincidentally our production of Heifner's companion play 'Patio' was similarly selected to be performed at Llandrindod Wells in the All-Winners' final of 2004.
Every year we aim to put on a Spring Production, a show to include a meal, and a Christmas show, either a pantomime or children's play. Our 2015 Christmas show was 'Grimm's Tales' which involved a cast of both adults and young people, drawn from the local area.
Our social programme includes an annual barbecue and a Patron's event. We often hold a series of play readings, during the summer months. Our Patrons' scheme exists for those who want to support us but do not necessarily want to get actively involved.
